Kirkland's Two Scores Lift #2 UMW Men's Soccer Past Neumann in NCAA 1st Round

Senior forward Josh Kirkland scored once in the second half and again early into overtime to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Neumann University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles improve to 17-1-2 on the season.

The game stood scoreless at halftime, despite the Eagles carrying a 13-2 lead in shots, and a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. UMW put eight shots on frame, but the Knights' goalkeeper was equal to the task each time.

Kirkland put UMW on the scoreboard at 71:43, taking a feed from Blake Hoskins into the box, where he turned and scored from the right side. Neumann rallied, however, and tied the score with 6:51 remaining in regulation, and the game went to overtime.

In the two extra 10 minute periods, Kirkland scored again to put the Eagles up early, 1:12 into the first OT. With 48 seconds left in the first overtime, Neumann fell victim to an own goal, and the Eagles were able to maintain that cushion through the second 10 minutes.

Mary Washington led in shots, 26-8, as well as corner kicks, 17-1. UMW junior goalkeeper Freddy Rogers made four saves in goal.

The Eagles will face John Carroll University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in second round action.
