UMW Men's Soccer Ranked No. 1 in United Soccer Coaches Poll

For the first time in program history, the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team was named No. 1 by the United Soccer Coaches poll, which was released on Tuesday afternoon.

A year after their Final Four run, the Eagles have quickly moved out to a 4-0 start, beating then-No. 7 Johns Hopkins on Sept. 3, 4-0. Mary Washington opened its season with a victory over RPI on Sept. 1 before traveling to Baltimore, Md. this past weekend for two matches. UMW won a close battle, 2-1, against Hobart on Friday before its 6-0 beatdown over Lycoming on Sunday afternoon.

Junior keeper Freddy Rogers was named back-to-back Coast-to-Coast Defensive Player of the Week the past two weeks for his effort in goal. So far, he's only conceded a single goal in 322 minutes and has recorded 14 saves.

But the Eagles' offense has arguably been the most impressive part of the team so far this season, scoring 16 goals -- coming from 12 different student-athletes -- in four games. Across all nation, they are tied for fourth in goal differental (15) and tied for ninth in goals-per-game (four).

Mary Washington travels to Richmond, Va. this weekend to play two more neutral site games with Hampden-Sydney (Friday) and Emory (Sunday) before a meeting at No. 2 Messiah on Sept. 23. You can follow all of the action on UMWEagles.com and all of our social links.
