Berg's 2OT Score Leads UMW Men's Soccer Past UW Whitewater in C2C Semifinal

Freshman forward Carter Berg (Reston, Va.) scored the game-winning goal with 3:32 remaining in the second overtime to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 9-5-2 on the season, and advance to Saturday's championship against #24 Christopher Newport University.

The Warhawks wasted little time in reaching the scoreboard, as they converted on a corner kick at 3:54 into play. The visitors continued to pressure the Eagles in the opening 15 minutes of play, but the UMW defense was able to keep the score at 1-0. Just before halftime, UMW found the tying score at 40:10, as senior Jeremy Hokenson (Fredericksburg, Va.) found the nets on an assist from freshman Kevin Sprince (Richmond, Va.).

The momentum of the late goal carried the Eagles into the second half, but despite several quality chances, could not find the go-ahead tally. After a scoreless ten minutes of overtime, the Eagles continued to pressure, while still keeping a focus defensively, as the Warhawks used long throw ins and corner kicks to keep threatening.

At 106:28, Berg eluded three defenders and lofted a shot from a difficult angle over the outstretched arm of the diving UWW goalkeeper for the winning score.

The Eagles led in shots, 25-12, as well as corner kicks, 11-9. UMW senior goalkeeper Ken Kurtz (Katonah, N.Y.) made seven saves in recording his eighth win of the season.

Mary Washington will host Christopher Newport on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for the conference title. The two teams have now played in three of the past four conference championships, with UMW winning in 2017 and 2019. The Eagles, winners of three straight league titles, defeated St. Mary's College in the final in 2018.
