UMW Men's Soccer Falls at University of Virginia, 2-0, on Monday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at the University of Virginia on Monday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va., as the Eagles clashed with the seven-time NCAA Division I champions in a tune-up for both teams before their conference tournaments.

The Eagles got off to a swift start, recording the first two shots of the contest. The game remained scoreless until the 15th minute, when UVA's Kome Ubogu scored on a header off a volleyed pass on a free kick. The game remained at 1-0 to halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles were quickly challenged, as the Cavaliers gained a penalty kick in the opening minutes. But UMW junior goalkeeper Griffin Hemmendinger (Norfok, Va./Granby), who was inserted into the game at halftime, was equal to the task, saving the penalty kick chance, to keep the score at 1-0. Virginia added an insurance goal at 55:24 off a corner kick, which would cap the scoring for the day.

"I was very pleased with how we represented ourselves", said UMW head coach Jason Kilby. "It was a great opportunity for our kids and our program. While the guys weren't happy with a loss, they were pleased with their effort against obviously a very strong opponent, coming less than 48 hours after a big victory for us on Saturday (against Christopher Newport at Homecoming)."

Virginia led in shots, 20-14, as well as in corner kicks, 5-3. Ken Kurtz made three saves, and Hemmendinger two on the day for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday, as they visit Salisbury University at 2:00 p.m. in the regular season finale.
