#21 UMW Men's Soccer Opens with 2-0 Win Over Mary Baldwin

Freshman midfielder Evan Fidler (Richmond, Va. / Mills Godwin) scored one goal and assisted on another in a 13-minute span of the second half to propel the 21st ranked University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Mary Baldwin University on Saturday in the Eagles' season opener. Sophomore Diego Guzman (Alexandria, Va. / Thomas Edison) also scored for the Eagles, 1-0 on the season.

The Eagles controlled play in the opening half, outshooting the Fighting Squirrels, 18-1, but had nothing to show on the scoreboard for their efforts. Finally, at 50:32. Fidler scored on a Josh Kirkland (Richmond, Va. / Deep Run) assist from the right to left. Thirteen minutes later, sophomore Guzman netted his first career marker on a slide from Fidler from the left.

UMW held a 29-6 advantage in shots, with senior goalkeeper Ken Kurtz gaining the shutout win with two saves. The Eagles held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Mary Washington will host North Carolina Wesleyan College at 1 pm on Sunday as part of the UMW Classic.
