UMW Men's Soccer Tops #20 CNU, 2-1, at Homecoming

Sophomore forward Ben Cisse scored the lone goal of the second half to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over #20 Christopher Newport University on Saturday at the Battleground for Homecoming. The Eagles improve to 11-5-1 overall, and 4-3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

In a game played before a packed house for Homecoming, the Eagles struck first, as freshman Jack Saslowski scored on a Mitchell Williams corner kick at 23:47. Christopher Newport wasted little time in tying the score at 1-1, as Andrew Gogolin scored at 25:13 on a Sean Christein assist. The game remained tied through intermission.

In the second half, the Eagles found the eventual game winner from sophomore Ben Cisse at 49:19, on an assist from Mike Bennett. Both offenses opened in the second frame, as CNU held a 10-9 advantage in shots, but neither team would score from that point, giving the Eagles the 2-1 win.

CNU led in shots, 16-13, and in corner kicks, 6-3. UMW goalkeeper Matt Spencer made four saves in net for the Eagles, while Zach Pedini had two saves for the Captains.

Mary Washington will close the regular season on Wednesday when they visit Penn State Harrisburg at 3:30 p.m. in another Capital Athletic Conference matchup.
