The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 27-13 decision to third ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon in a lightning-delayed contest at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 6-8 on the season.

The Captains jumped on top in the opening minute, but the Eagles tied the score at 1-1 on a goal from Henry Moag at 13:44. Christopher Newport then scored eight straight, before J.D. Nozemack scored unassisted to cut the deficit to 9-2. The Captains scored the final two of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, CNU scored first, but the Eagles aswered at 13:03 on a goal from Jackson Popeck on a Jacob Fowler assist off of a faceoff win. The Captains added two before Nozemack scored on a Mike Seraphin-Jones assist. Dave Votapek scored after two Captains goals, but then lightning reached the area, and a two-hour delay ensued with 1:42 left in the second quarter.

After the lengthy delay, the Captains scored to end the second, but Moag scored to open the third. CNU reeled off four straight, before Fowler scored off a faceoff. The Eagles capped the quarter with two goals after the Captains scored twice, with Seraphin-Jones and Carter Lynch picking up markers.

Nozemack and Popeck opened the fourth with goals, and after a pair of CNU scores, Keegan Shipe scored on a Patton Robertson assist.

The Eagles were outshot, 57-39, and CNU led in ground balls, 44-30. Riley Green had two saves, Wyatt Martin stopped 16, and Ryan D'Angelo one in goal for UMW.

UMW will visit St. Mary's College of MD on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
