UMW Men's Basketball Falls at Stockton in NCAA Tourney 2nd Round, 68-65

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 68-65 decision at Stockton University in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday evening. The Eagles close their season with a 20-9 record.

In a closely-fought contest from start to finish, neither team could pull away from the other, and neither team carried more than a seven-point lead after the opening minutes. UMW started swiftly, as senior Greg Rowson opened the game with a pair of slam dunks, as the Eagles built an 11-3 lead early on. Stockton battled back, but the Eagles maintained the lead throughout, and carried a 31-27 lead to halftime.

In the second, Stockton opened the half with a 7-0 run. From there, the game swung back and forth the rest of the way, with the two teams trading big shots. Stockton held the lead until 11:24 left, when senior Da'Shawn Cook hit a layup to give the Eagles a 44-43 lead. After Stockton regained the lead, Rowson hit a big layup with 5:02 left to give UMW the 60-59 advantage. The Ospreys assumed the lead again at 63-60, but a key three pointer from Zack Blue with 2:16 left again knotted the score.

But Stockton hit a three pointer in response, and connected on a pair of free throws to end the game.

Rowson led the Eagles with 17 points on 6-11 shooting, while Cook scored 12, and Daniel Peterson 11. UMW shot 22-52 from the field (42.3%), making 5-18 three point shots, and 16-23 free throws. Stockton shot 20-51 (39.2%), making 9-31 three point shots and 19-24 free throws.

The Eagles close the season with 20 victories, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history.
