UMW Men's Basketball Falls to CNU in C2C Championship Game, 65-52

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team drops a decision to Christopher Newport University, 65-52, in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference finals on Saturday in Santa Cruz, California. The Eagles end their strong season at 19-8 on the season.

UMW and CNU started slow, with the score at 4-2 UMW a little over 3 minutes into the game. Two Emmanuel Aghayere free throws would tie the game at 7 apiece with 11:41 to go in the first half. Zack Blue and Cameron McCravy would make back-to-back 3-pointers to make the score 13-11 with 9:14 left, and the two teams would trade baskets for the duration of the first half. Da'Shawn Cook would make the last UMW bucket of the 1st with 27 seconds to go, with the assist from Zack Blue.

Greg Rowson would score the first points of the 2nd half, bringing the Eagles to within one point of the Captains. Dorian Davis would make a jumper at 11:17, with another assist from Zach Blue. Daniel Peterson would make a jump shot at 10:13 to bring the score to 43-38, with CNU in the lead. Two more jump shots from Daniel Peterson at 6:48 and 3:57 would bring the score to 54-46, with the Captains controlling the remainder of the game and holding the Eagles scoreless for 2 minutes towards the end of the game, until Greg Rowson put up a layup at 00:24 and a 3-pointer at 00:06, respectively.

Greg Rowson led UMW with 18 points 8 rebounds, with Cameron McCravy adding 10 points and 2 steals, Da'Shawn Cook putting up 8 points and 6 rebounds, and Daniel Peterson showing good numbers with 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Mary Washington shot 36.4% from the field (20-55), making 4-19 three point shots and 8-16 free throws. Christopher Newport shot 47.1% (24-51), making 5-20 three pointers and 12-19 free throws. 

The Eagles will end a strong 2023 season at 19-8, with many great highlights and high hopes for next season.
