UMW Men's Basketball Tops Marymount, 70-52; Win Streak at Seven

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team jumped out to a big early lead and rode that momentum to a 70-52 victory over Marymount University on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles, who run their win streak to seven straight, improve to 8-2 on the season.

Both teams opened shooting poorly, but the Eagles kicked into gear several minutes in, starting the scoring with an 18-4 run over the first 10 minutes of play. A Colin Coyne jumper upped UMW's advantage to 20-6, and a three-pointer from senior Ra'Shawn Cook extended the lead to 23-7 with 7:51 remaining. Coyne and sophomore Daniel Peterson followed with baskets to push the margin to 27-9 with 6:15 left. An 11-4 Saints run trimmed the score to 37-22, before a Riley Welch jumper capped the first half scoring.

A three pointer from senior Anias Saunders pushed UMW's lead to 20 to start the second half, and the margin would stay between 15 and 20 points for much of the second half. The Eagles used a pair of Peterson jumpers and a three pointer from senior Da'Shawn Cook to lead by as many as 26, with 13:06 left, and even an 11-4 run from the Saints would draw them no closer than 19, at 59-40. Senior forward Emmanuel Aghayere would lead the way down the stretch, scoring seven of his team-high 14 points in the final 10 minutes.

Aghayere led UMW with 14 points on 6-11 shooting, and grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double. Coyne had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Da'Shawn and Ra'Shawn Cook each scored 11 points, combining for 11 rebounds. Saunders, playing much of the day in foul trouble, added 10 points, as did Peterson, who also added seven rebounds.

The Eagles shot 46.3% from the field (31-67), making 6-24 three point attempts and 2-8 free throws. Marymount shot 33.3% (19-57), making 6-25 three point tries and 8-16 free throws. UMW dominated the boards, 50-31.

UMW will be back in action next Saturday when they host Eastern Mennonite University at 3:00 p.m.
