UMW Men's Basketball Drops 65-63 Decision at Marymount on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 65-63 decision at Marymount University on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, Va. The Eagles fall to 7-8 on the season, and 3-5 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

In a tightly played contests throughout, neither team led by more than six points throughout the first 20 minutes. The back and forth action saw eight lead changes, with UMW building as much as a six-point lead on a Jacob Williams layup with 9:50 left in the half, 19-13.

The Saints followed with back to back three pointers to tie the score at 19-19, but the Eagles used buckets from Brent Mahoney and TJ Jones to take a 26-22 lead with 6:34 to go. The Saints scored five straight to regain the lead, and then the teams traded baskets for three straight baskets and lead changes.

UMW went ahead 32-29 on a four-point play from Jones with 3:27 remaining and the Eagles led, 38-35, at halftime.

In the second, Marymount scored eight straight points to take a 43-38 lead in the opening minutes. John Lutkenhaus hit a three pointer, and Jones hit a layup to tie the score, and the back and forth action continued. After a Saints basket, Lutkenhaus hit another three to return the lead to the Eagles, 46-45, with 15:26 left.

After the Saints made a basket, UMW scored five straight to take a 51-47 lead with 12:44 to go. Marymount responded with five straight to take the lead with 9:58 to go, and the Eagles tied the score with 9:20 to go, 52-52.

Marymount made a three pointer after an Eagle free throw, and UMW used an Eric Shaw basket to tie the score with 6:54 to go. The Saints used a pivotal 6-0 run, including three each from Danny Ferry and Rick Narcisse, to take a 61-55 lead with 4:14 remaining.

Shaw then made three straight baskets to tie the score at 61-61, and, after another MU basket, Shaaw hit for another to tie the score at 63-63 in the final minute. Marymount's Dmitri Rucker made a layup with 19 seconds left, but the Eagles couldn't convert on two opportunities to tie or win in the waning seconds.

UMW shot 42.6% from the field (26-61), making 4-21 three pointers, and 7-12 free throws. Marymount shot 47.4% from the field (27-57), and 7-18 on three pointers and 4-14 on free throws.

Jones scored 20 points 8-20 shooting, including a pair of three pointers and two free throws. Shaw, in his first action in several months missed due to injury, scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Ferry had 21 for Marymount.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday night when they visit Southern Virginia University at 8:00 p.m.
