2007-08 University of Mary Washington Riding Season in Review

The 2007-08 season saw Mary Washington lead the regional standings after winning events at Mount St. Mary's and Williand & Mary, and finishing second at shows at Goucher and Richmond in the fall. The Eagles competed for the first time in the Holiday Tournament of Champions in Mount Olive, N.J., finishing ninth of 26 teams.

The Eagles won a pair of weekend shows at Hazelwild Farm in February to clinch first place in the season regional standings. UMW then sent five individuals to the zone show after individually quialifying at the regional show, and competed for the Collegiate Cup as a team.

At zones, the Eagles finished second overall in the team competition, qualifying for the national show for the first time since 1994. Seniors Jessica Van Brocklin and Lauren Campbell also qualified individually for the national show, which was held at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in early May.

The Eagles turned in outstanding performances across the board at nationals, finishing in seventh place in the team competition, with Van Brocklin finishing third and fourth in her two classes (open fences and open flat), and Hannah Woll earning a sixth place for the team in novice flat. Other team competitiors included Brittany Hill, Tiffany Batterton, Sarah Leavitt, Shannon Brown, and Catarina Brokaw. Van Brocklin was the national champion in Individual Open Flat and Lauren Campbell placed third in the nation in the same class.
