Xavier Herring Named UMW Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year

University of Mary Washington senior baseball player Xavier Herring (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) has been named as the 2022-23 UMW Athletics Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Herring gained the C2C Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award after graduating with a 3.94 grade-point average with a degree in Psychology. In his four-year career with the Eagles, Xavier played in 80 games, batting .272 with 53 hits, with eight doubles and three triples. He scored 42 runs and drove in 28, and added nine stolen bases. He is a four-year member of the  C2C All-Academic Team and UMW Athletic Honor Roll.

This season, he started 25 games and played in 35 games total. Xavier hit .289, with 26 hits, 22 runs, and 10 RBI. He had nine walks and only struck out five times in over 100 plate appearances. He was successful in 7-7 attempts in stolen bases. He made only made one error all season in the field for a .982 fielding percentage.

Academically, Xavier is a member of Psi Chi psychology honor society, Chi Alpha Sigma student-athlete honor society, Phi Beta Kappa, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He served three years on the UMW Athletic Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

The longest running award in the athletic department, the Male and Female Scholar-Athletes have been presented every year since 1990-91, and Herring becomes the eighth baseball player to win the award, and the fifth in the past seven years.
