Offense Erupts in UMW Baseball's 14-4 Win at Eastern Mennonite

The University of Mary Washington baseball team erupted for six runs in the second inning and five in the third en route to a 14-4 victory at Eastern Mennonite University on Thursday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va. The Eagles improve to 24-9 on the season.

UMW's second started with Ryan Schwarz reaching on an error, stealing second, and scoring on a Tim Blankenship groundout. Andrew Gerhart reached on an error that scored Cooper Fulton, who had doubled. Noah Roots provided a bases-loaded single, and Bobby Ayscue walked with the bases loaded, before Nick Ciuffreda popped a two-run single.

In the third, Blankenship walked and Gerhart singled before Jacon Christenbury singled for an RBI. Roots provided a sacrifice fly, and Christenbury scored on a wild pitch before Ayscue rapped an RBI single.

UMW added one in the fourth as Gerhart singled and Christenbury doubled him home. The Eagles closed the scoring in the seventh on an RBI single from Ciuffreda and a sacrifice fly from Philip Woodard.

Christenbury had two singles and a double, with two runs scored and two RBI. Ciuffreda added three hits as well. John (Ketz) Murray gained his first win in relief, as he allowed one hit in three innings, with one walk and one strikeout.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m.
