UMW Baseball Tops Susquehanna, 9-5, in 10 Innings on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington gained a hard-earned extra inning win at Susquehanna University on Saturday in game one of their three-game series, winning 9-5 in 10 innings. The Eagles improve to 21-7 on the season.

UMW scored one in the first, as Jacob Christenbury and Bobby Ayscue doubled. In the second, UMW added a run as Ryan Schwarz singled and advanced to third on a pickoff error and scored on a groundout by Andrew Gerhart

Susquehanna scored two in the second and one in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, but UMW answered with two in the fifth. Xavier Herring singled and moved to second base on a sacrifice, and scored on a Jonathan Sedmak double. Noah Roots followed with an RBI double to score Sedmak.

The hosts tied the score with a run in their half of the fifth, but the Eagles went back ahead with a run in the sixth on singles from Schwarz and Christenbury. Susquehanna tied the score in the bottom of the ninth, but the Eagles erupted for four runs in the 10th. Luke Guerzon and Scwarz singled and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Herring provided a two-run single, and Ty Lowe added a two-run single.

Schwarz led the offense with three hits and three runs scored, while Ayscue had two doubles, and Christenbury, Sedmak and Roots had a single and double.

Lowe gained the win in relief, allowing one run on four hits in four innings, with one walk and one strikeout.

The two teams will meet for a doubleheader at noon on Sunday.
