UMW Baseball Tops Southern Virginia, 10-4, on Tuesday

The University of Mary Washingotn baseball team broke opened tight game with a four-run eighth inning in defeating Southern Virginia University, 10-4, on Tuesday afternoon at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 19-7 on the season.

UMW jumped out in front with four runs in the first inning on two hits, four walks, and a hit by pitch. Jonathan Sedmak had an RBI single, and Luke Guerzon added a two-run double to highlight the inning. 

SVU scored once in the second, but the Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, as Bobby Ayscue tripled and scored on a single from Ty Lowe. The Knights scored two in the third and one in the fourth to pull to within 5-4, but the Guerzon scored Jonathan Sedmak with a single in the Eagles' fourth.

In the eighth, Lowe delivered with a two-run single, and scored along with Ayscue on a wild pitch.

Guerzon had a double and two singles to lead the offense, while Ayscue doubled and tripled, and Lowe and Sedmak each had two hits.

Junior Brendan McComber gained the win in relief, allowing no runs on one hit in four innings, with no walks and six strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, when they visit Bridgewater College at 3:00 p.m.
