UMW Baseball Sweeps Rutgers-Camden, 11-4 and 6-4, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team continued its winning ways on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from Rutgers-Camden, 11-4 and 6-4. The Eagles improve to 12-5, and run their win streak to six straight.

In the opener, the Eagles jumped on top with an unearned run in the first, as sophomore shortstop Jacob Christenbury led off with a walk, and advanced to third on an error. Sophomore second baseman Burke Steifman followed with a sacrifice fly for the first run of the game.

UMW's lead stayed at 1-0 into the fifth, when the Eagles added four runs. First baseman Alex Purgason led off with a single, and moved to third on a double from right fielder Cooper Fulton. Steifman singled to third to score Purgason, and Jonathan Sedmak followed with a three run homer to left to up the margin to 5-0.

Rutgers-Camden scored three in the sixth, but the Eagles got one back in the bottom of the frame. Left fielder Ryan Schwarz led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a single from Mike Dennis.

The Eagles added five in the seventh, as Steifman singled and Sedmak walked before Ty Lowe provided an RBI single. Bobby Ayscue walked, and Schwarz followed with a bases-clearing triple. Purgason scored Schwarz with a sacrifice fly.

Sedmak singled and homered, driving in three runs and scoring two, while Schwarz singled and tripled with three RBI and two runs scored.

Junior Brendan McComber gained his fourth win in as many starts, allowing three runs on five hits in six innings, with three walks and six strikeouts, including the 100th of his career. Freshman Ryan Northup collected his first save, after allowing one hit in three scoreless innings, with one walk and four strikeouts.

In game two, UMW scored three in the first. Ty Lowe singled to drive in Burke Steifman, then scored along with Bobby Ayscue on a two-run triple from Ryan Schwarz. Lowe homered in the third, and UMW scored another in the sixth, as Schwarz doubled and scored on a double from Alex Purgason. The Scarlet Raptors scored two in the seventh and two in the ninth, but Griffin Graham gained the save with the final out.

Lowe singled and homered and Schwarz doubled and tripled. Christenbury and Purgason singled and doubled. Freshman Jackson Beale took the win in relief, allowing three earned runs in 4.1 innings, with one walk and six strikeouts. Starter Gabe Delgado allowed no runs on one hit in 4.1 innings, with four walks and four strikeouts. Graham gained the save, allowing a hit before getting the final out on a fly to center.

The Eagles will be back in action on Monday when they host third ranked Eastern Connecticut State at 3:00 p.m.
