UMW Baseball Fends Off Keystone, 7-6, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team held off Keystone College, 7-6, on Saturday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Eagles improve to 8-5 on the season.

After two scoreless frames, the Eagles jumped ahead with three runs in the third, as one run scored on a passed ball, another on a Ty Lowe sacrifice fly, and a third on a Luke Guerzon RBI single. Keystone scored twice in the fourth, but UMW got one back in the bottom of the inning, as Xavier Herring reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an error.

After allowing a run in the sixth, UMW scored solo runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth, before fighting off a three-run rally in the ninth for the win.

Herring had two hits and three runs scored for the offense, while Bobby Ayscue added a hit and walk. Junior Brendan McComber gained the win - his third in as many starts - allowing three runs on six hits in 7.2 innings, with three walks and 11 strikeouts.

The Eagles will close their spring break trip in a rematch with Keystone on Sunday at 9 a.m.
