UMW Baseball Sweeps Sunday Pair From Mount Saint Mary

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a doubleheader from Mount Saint Mary College (NY) on Sunday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium, winning the opener, 14-4, in eight innings, before taking the nightcap, 5-3. UMW improves to 3-0 on the season.

In the opener, the Eagles fell behind in the first, but scored a pair in the bottom of the inning to gain the lead. Jonathan Sedmak singled, moved to third on a double from Bobby Ayscue, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Ty Lowe. Ayscue scored on an errant throw on the play.

The Knights added a run in the second to tie the score, but again UMW rallied in its half of the second with one score. Ryan Schwarz walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch, before scoring on an Alex Purgason RBI groundout.

UMW scored three in the third, as Jacob Christenbury scored on a Lowe groundout, Luke Guerzon plated Ayscue with a single, and scored on a single from Purgason.

Mount Saint Mary scored two in the fourth, but the Eagles put the game away with four in the seventh and four in the eighth. Ayscue had a run-producing triple and Lowe added an RBI single, before Schwarz added a sacrifice fly, and Guerzon scored on an error in the seventh. Xavier Herring doubled and scored on a Christenbury single to open the eighth. Sedmak doubled, and Lowe followed with an RBI single to right. Guerzon added an RBI single before Schwar added his second sac fly of the day.

Ayscue singled, doubled, and tripled, and Guerzon singled three times to lead the offense. Senior Ryan Dudak pitched five innings of six-hit relief, allowing one earned run, with no walks and four strikeouts.

In game two, UMW scored twice in the second, as Purgason doubled, Mike Dennis was hit by a pitch, before Sedmak rapped a two-run double down the left field line. The Eagles scored three in the seventh, as Christenbury singled and scored on an Ayscue hit, and Guerzon and Schwarz followed with RBI singlles. The Knights scored three in the eighth, but would draw no closer.

Ayscue provided two hits to lead the offense. Senior Gabe Delgado gained the win, allowing no runs and three hits in five innings, walking two and striking out six. 

The Eagles will host Gettysburg College on Monday at 2:30 p.m.
