UMW Baseball Comes From Behind to Top Catholic, 7-6

The University of Mary Washington baseball team overcame a 5-4 deficit with three runs in the seventh inning to top Catholic University, 7-6, on Thursday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The Eagles improve to 24-10 on the season, and extend their win streak to six games.

The Eagles trailed, 3-1, after three innings, but plated one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Catholic came right back with two in the bottom of the sixth to assume a 5-4 advantage.

Senior Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory) singled to open the seventh, stole second and third, and scored on a Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) single. Nick Espinosa (Arnold, Md., Broadneck) and Seth Jordan (Springfield, Va., South County) then hit back-to-back doubles to give UMW a 7-5 advantage, and winning pitcher Ryan Engelking (Silver Spring, Md., DeMatha) allowed one run in 3.1 innings to keep the Eagles ahead.

Wright was 2-5 with two runs scored and Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson), who went 2-4 with two runs scored. Engelking allowed one run on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Eagles will take a week off for finals before hosting Southern Virginia College for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on May 1.
