UMW Volleyball Falls to CNU, 3-1, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Christopher Newport University on Saturday at Ron Rosner Arena. Set scores were 25-13, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22.

The Captains started with a flourish, committing just two attack errors in each of the first two sets, while the Eagles struggled with 13, to score 25-13 and 25-18 points. In the third, UMW held a slim lead through the early going, before reeling off six of seven points to grab an 18-10 advantage. The Captains stormed back to cut the margin to within 23-20, but UMW used a kill from senior Peyton Dunow and an attack error to claim the third set, 25-20.

In the fourth, the Captains scored the first five points, but a rally with three points, keyed by kills from senior Savannah Powers and sophomore Lexie Hendricks, cut the margin to 12-9. Once again, CNU responded with five of six points to grab a 17-10 lead, but once again UMW answered, scoring seven straight points, with kills from Powers and freshman Krista Rodgers, to knot the score at 17-17.

The Captains scored the next two points, and were to keep UMW at bay for the remainder of the set for a 25-22 win.

Powers led the Eagles with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Dunow and Rodgers each had 12 kills for the Eagle attack. Junior Wren Berry had 38 assists, and Rodgers added four block assists.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Southern Virginia University at 7 p.m. in another key conference showdown.
