UMW Volleyball Tops Salisbury, 3-0, on Wednesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team topped Salisbury University, 3-0, on Wednesday evening in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 11-11 overall, and 5-1 in the CAC. Senior Savannah Powers led the Eagles with 11 kills and also added 12 digs on the night.

Powers got the Eagles out to a fast start in the first as she recorded the first two kills of the match. The Eagles kept their advantage and took a 9-5 lead on another kill from Powers. After the Seagulls cut the first set to one, 10-9, the Eagles reeled off six straight points with Peyton Dunow serving. Dunow had two aces in that run. With the Eagles maintaining a six point edge, 20-14, they scored four straight points to go up double digits. Krista Rodgers put the first set away with a kill on an assist from Wren Berry to win 25-15. 

UMW gained another early edge in the second set as they went up 5-2, courtesy of a kill by Powers. Tenley Hares recorded a kill with the score 8-6, to put the Eagles back up three. Dunow had a kill to make the score 14-9, then Powers and Aidan Finegan tag teamed for a block, and an attack error from Salisbury put the score at 16-9 in favor of the Eagles. For the second straight set, UMW took a double digit lead as they went up 20-10 with Kendal Hall serving. The Eagles closed out the second set with ease as they won 25-12 on an attacking error.

The Eagles started fast for a third straight time to go ahead 5-2 again, this time on a kill from Finegan. The Seagulls then went on a 7-1 run to take a 9-6 advantage. UMW answered with three straight points to tie the match at nine a piece. The Eagles took a two point lead, 12-10, as Dunow recorded a kill. Salisbury kept the third set close and with the Seagulls leading 15-14, UMW won seven straight points to go ahead 21-15. In that run Finegan, Powers, and Rodgers all recorded a kill a piece. With the score 21-18, Powers asserted her dominance on the night as she recorded a kill and then had three straight service aces to close the match out and win 25-18.

Hares contributed eight kills for the Eagles, while Dunow, Rodgers, and Finegan all had four a piece. Hall led UMW with 22 digs. Wren Berry dished out 26 assists and had four digs. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday as they will host CNU for Homecoming at 2 p.m. in the Anderson Center. UMW will look to avenge a 3-0 loss from earlier in the season.
