UMW Volleyball Downs Marymount (Va.), 3-0, on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team downed Marymount (Va.), 3-0, on Wednesday evening in the Anderson Center. The Eagles improve to 6-8 overall this season.

In the first set, the Eagles and Saints found themselves tied at several points in the beginning. The Saints finally broke the latest tie by going on a 5-point run to bring the score to 11-7. The Eagles were able to gain the lead when Senior Savannah Powers had 3 kills in a row giving the Eagles a 1-point lead. The Saints responded with a 3-point run to retake the lead but it wouldn't be for long. After a block from Powers and Sophomore Lexie Hendricks, the Eagles earned 5 points in a row to bring the game to 24-21. Powers and Hendricks were able to put the game away with another block to give the Eagles the first set.

The Eagles opened the second set with a kill by Senior Peyton Dunow and continued on a 7 point run. The Saints were able to gain a point but the Eagles responded with 5 unanswered points. A kill by Powers followed by 2 attack errors gave the Eagles an 11-3 lead. Marymount was able to bring the score closer at 13-22 but a kill by Junior Tenley Hares followed by a service ace by Junior Maya Takashima put the score 13-24. Dunow secured set 2 with a kill giving the Eagles a 2-0 set lead.

The third set saw the Saints with a 2-0 lead but the Eagles would answer with a 4 point stretch. Powers would produce a kill that led the Eagles to gain 7 points bringing the score to 21-12. After a couple points for Marymount, Dunow put the third set to an end, ending 25-16.

Dunow led the Eagles with 15 kills while Powers ended with 11. Junior Wren Berry dished out 34 assists and had 11 digs. UMW hit .323 and had a total of 14 blocks.

The Eagles return to action this Saturday at 2:00pm when they host St. Mary's (Md.) to open up CAC play.
