UMW Women's Tennis Competes at Weekend Navy Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational

The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team opened the 2021-22 season at the U.S. Naval Academy's Bill and Sandra Moore Invitational this weekend.

In the A singles flight, Eagle senior Claire Coleman defeated Ella Imhof of Lehigh in the first round, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6, before falling in the second round to Jillian Taggart of Navy, 6-0, 6-1. After dropping her opening match, UMW junior Abby Moghtader won the consolation final, defeating Kasey Moore of Navy, 6-4, 6-4, Rachel Buchinsky of Lehigh, 6-3, 6-3, and Anastasia Gubanova of St. Bonaventure, 7-5, 0-6, 10-8.

In the B singles flight, senior Lauren Quinn dropped her opening match, but then advanced to the consolation final by defeating Emily Stanley of St. Bonaventure, 6-0, 6-2, and Nicole Gasser of Monmouth, 6-3, 6-3. She fell in the final to Alana Kubanova of Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-2, ret. Also in the B flight, Amanda Hagino dropped her first match, 4-6, 6-2, 10-2, before defeating Andrea Roque, 6-1, 6-2, and falling in the semis to Kubanova, 6-3, 6-2.

In the C flight, sophomore Hanna Kimmey won in the first round over Zoe Klapman of Monmouth, 6-3, 1-6, 10-4, before beating Stella Ribaldo of Navy, 3-2 (ret. inj.). She then fell in the semis to Namie Isago of FDU, 6-2, 7-5. 

Freshman Emily Beckner fell twice in the D flight, while Riley Smith picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sydney DeNardo of Monmouth in the E flight.

In doubles, Quinn and Moghtader picked up a win over Bucknell, 8-4, in the second round before falling to Navy in the second, 8-5, in the A bracket. Hagino and Coleman defeated Bucknell in the second round of the B bracket, 8-1, before falling to Navy, 8-2. Kimmey and Smith won the C bracket consolation, defeating Monmouth, 8-1, in the semis before taking the final in a walkover.

The Eagles will compete next weekend at the St. Joseph's Invitational in Philadelphia.
