UMW's Moses Hutchison, Abby Moghtader Named CAC Tennis Players of the Week

CAC -- The Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) has announced its weekly awards following the fourth week of the 2020 spring tennis season. Mary Washington junior Moses Hutchison earned CAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades, while Mary Washington freshman Abby Moghtader received CAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.


MEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Moses Hutchison - Mary Washington

Mary Washington junior Moses Hutchison led #14 Mary Washington with three wins over the course of the week - two in singles and one in doubles, as the Eagles split a pair of matches. He recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win at one singles against John Carroll, and added a big singles win over the 15th ranked player in Division III in Jacob Zalenski, 3-6, 7-6, 10-4, against Kenyon. He also teamed with Michael Fleming for an 8-5 win at one doubles, to account for two of the Eagles' three points in a 6-3 loss - their first of the season.


WOMEN'S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Abby Moghtader - Mary Washington

Mary Washington freshman Abby Moghtader picked up a pair of singles wins and two doubles wins as #15 Mary Washington defeated Chapman University, 6-3, and #30 Caltech, 5-4, last week. The freshman gained a 6-1, 6-2 win at four singles against Chapman, and won 6-3, 6-4 against Caltech at four. Her 8-7 win in doubles with Claire Coleman was a key point in UMW's 5-4 victory as well.

LEAGUE NOTES

Salisbury senior Annika Kezman went 4-0 in singles and doubles play to help Salisbury defeat Washington College and Stevens during the week. Kezman only surrendered five points in No. 1 singles play en route to two sweeps. Kezman teamed with Veronica Cuellar to remain undefeated on the season...Senior Patrick MacLean helped Salisbury win matches over Washington and Stevens last week with a pair of wins in singles and doubles action. MacLean and Stefan Hein earned an 8-5 win over Washington's Paul Eisenmagen and Christian Gruyon then an 8-2 win over Stevens' Eloi Pradier and Gabriel Sifuentes in No. 3 doubles. In No. 3 singles, MacLean earned straight-set victories over Washington's August Meriot and Stevens' Philip Szkudlarski...St. Mary's first-year. Stephen Alam finished the week with a perfect 4-0 record between singles and doubles play. Alam and Ethan Garrenn collected an 8-5 doubles victory against Lynchburg at the one spot. Next, Alam recorded a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Hornets and the three spot in singles action. Against Randolph, Alam and Garren earned an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles. In singles, Alam defeated his WildCat opponent 6-1, 6-2 in the two spot. The Seahawks finished the week 2-0, defeating Lynchburg 7-2 and Randolph 8-1...Southern Virginia freshman Marcos Dias started the week against Division I Radford University falling in a close set to the Big South conference champions No.1 singles 7-6(5), 6-2. The Brazil native then faced ranked No. 35 NYU where the Knights fell in a heartbreaker 5-4. Against the No. 1 for the Violets he posted a dominating 6-2, 6-2 victory and earning a victory in the No. 2 doubles with Paul Monson, 8-4.
