Junior Rachel Summers advanced to the round of 16 in singles action before falling, while Summers and Lauren Quinn bowed out in the first round of the NCAA tournament held in Kalamzoo, Michigan on Friday.
Summers played Erika Oku from Kenyon University in the round of 32. After falling to Oku in the regular season, Summers avenged the loss with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 win. In the first set, Oku was up 4-3 and won the next two games to win the first set 6-3. Summers then came back in the second set and was up 5-2 to take advantage. Oku won the next four games to go back on top 6-5. Summers came up big in the next two games to take the second set 7-6. Summers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set and never looked back to win 6-1.
In the round of 16, Summers took on Marjorie Antohi from the University of Chicago. Summers got out to a 3-2 advantage in the first set. Antohi won the next four games to take the first set 6-3. Antohi went on to win the second set 6-1 to take the match.
In doubles action, Summers and Quinn took on the overall #1 seed from Claremont Mudd Scripps College. The Stags got out to a lead in the first set and held on for a 6-3 win. After the Stags were up 5-2 in the second set, the duo made a run and tied the match up at 5-5. CMS went on to win the next two games and win the match 7-5. The duo concludes their season with a 19-5 overall record.
