Summers, Quinn, Canizares Gain Major Awards as All-CAC Women's Tennis Teams Announced

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Mary Washington sophomore Rachel Summers was selected as the CAC Player of the Year to lead the 2019 All-CAC Women's Tennis team. Mary Washington freshman Lauren Quinn and collected Rookie of the Year honors, while Mary Washington head coach Art Canizares was tabbed as the CAC Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to another conference title. 

Summers becomes the 27th UMW player to collect the CAC's top award as Player of the Year. Summers was named a first-team All-CAC singles pick after for the third year in a row and also earned first-team doubles accolades for the second straight season alongside Quinn. Summers posted a 10-8 overall No. 1 singles record along with 5-0 in CAC action.

UMW's Quinn, who played primarily at the No. 3 singles for the Eagles, compiled a 15-7 overall record including a 15-4 mark in dual matches and 5-0 in league action en route to Rookie of the Year accolades. Quinn is the 13th Eagle to win CAC Rookie of the Year and follows Rachel Cooper who won it last year. She was also a first-team All-CAC singles pick at the No. 3 slot and first-team doubles at the No. 1 position with Summers.

Canizares, who is in his first year as interim head coach after being the assistant since 2005, captured CAC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Eagles to a 20-4 overall record, 7-0 CAC record, the 2019 CAC Championship and NCAA Tournament hosting duties. This marks the 25th time Mary Washington has garnered Coach of the Year accolades, including 14 consecutive seasons.

Mary Washington led the conference with all six singles players and all three doubles teams earning All-CAC recognition, including four first-team singles honorees and two first-team doubles selections. Christopher Newport collected four all-conference singles honorees and a pair of doubles teams.
