#19 UMW Women's Tennis Falls to #9 Amherst, 5-0, in NCAA Tournament Third Round

The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to ninth-ranked Amherst College on Sunday at the Battleground in the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Eagles's season comes to a close with a 20-5 record.

The Mammoths gained steam in doubles play, jumping out to early leads. Avery Wagman and Anya Ivenitsky topped Kait Brogan and Ashley Barrow at one, 8-3, to snap the Eagles' duo's 16-match win streak in gaining the first point. Vickie Ip and Kelsey Chen then downed Caroline Mosberg and Rachel Summers at two, 8-2, and completed the sweep with an 8-2 win by Camille Smukler and Maddie Dewire over Brittany McBride and Danielle Mirabella at three.

Amherst continued to apply the pressure in singles by taking the first set at each match. Chen rallied in the second set to take the fourth point at three, with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jabusch, and Smukler gained the clinching point at one with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Brogan at one.

The Mammoths will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals next weekend in Claremont, Cal. The Eagles' 20-win season is their second straight, and third in five seasons, and the Eagles have now competed in the past 20 NCAA Tournaments. Brogan and Barrow will compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship in Claremont on May 24-26.
