UMW Women's Rugby Falls at NOVA Community College

UMW Women's Rugby Falls at NOVA Community College

On October 15, the UMW Women's Rugby team traveled to Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), Loudoun Campus, in the first ever meeting between the two teams.

The first half of the match was back and forth, with possession changing often. However, two mistakes by the UMW defense allowed NVCC to score twice within the first 12 minutes. Converting one of the tries, NVCC led 12-0.  The tempo of the match changed immediately after the second NVCC try, as UMW quickly brought the ball down the field, scoring at the 15 and 19 minute mark.  Scoring her first try ever for UMW was Katy Field. The second try was scored by Kayla Zegada. With UMW missing both conversations, the scored stood at 12-10. UMW relaxed however, and in less than 3 minutes, NVCC scored their third try, bringing the score to 17-10. Possession in the next 10 minutes stayed mostly with Mary Washington. At the 33rd minute, UMW was able to equalize with a try by Sidney Hughes and a conversion by Libby York. With no time remaining in the half, NVCC scored and converted another try. At the half, the score was 24-17 in favor of NVCC.

In the second half, the UMW defense continued their struggles. NVCC scored just two minutes in the second half. NVCC continued to put points on the board, score five more unanswered tries.  With a few minutes remaining in the match, UMW was able to control the open field play, scoring with one minute left. Scoring her first try ever for UMW was Ella Weber, with Kayla Zegada making the conversion. The final score was 56-24 in favor of NVCC.

On Oct 22, Mary Washington will host the Alumni.  Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 am.
