Women's Rugby Rolls Longwood, 83-10

Women's Rugby Rolls Longwood, 83-10

On October 9, 2021, the Mary Washington Women's Rugby team hosted Longwood University.  Not having faced Longwood in close to two years, UMW did not know what to expect.

At the kickoff, Mary Washington had problems with ball control.  Going into the contact their ability to maintain possession was not always consistent.  Several loose balls resulted in possession for both sides.  For the first five minutes, the match could have gone either way.  Then, at the 7-minute mark, Senior Oliva Stuart drove in a try that was converted by Kayla Smith.  This seemed to calm the nerves of Mary Washington as they began to take over the match.

Five minutes later, rookie Carrie Garvey had a strong run and second try for Mary Washington.  Unfortunately, the conversion was missed, leaving the score at 12-0, in favor of UMW.  It was apparent that Garvey's run gave Mary Washington the confidence they needed.  In the next 20 minutes, 7 tries were scored by UMW.  Scoring were rookies Charmaine Spencer and Carrie Garvey.  Banging in tries were veterans Kayla Smith (twice), Shannon Gaskins (twice) and Kayla Zegada.  Converting a try was Kayla Zegada, with 3 conversions added by Libby York.  Being up 57-0, UMW relaxed a bit and was caught off guard by an inspired Longwood team.  At the 33rd minute, Longwood was finally able string to together well executed rucks, catching UMW over of position and putting 5 deserving points on the board.  The last 7 minutes of the half became a stalemate, with neither side adding to the board.  At the half, the score was 57-5, in Mary Washington's favor.

Once the whistle blew for the second half, it only took Carrie Garvey two minutes to score her third try of the match.  Converting her second try of the match, Kayla Zegada brought the score to 64-5.  Longwood, whose heart never left the match, immediately pushed Mary Washington's defense.  It only took a few minutes to catch UMW by surprise, giving Longwood there second try.  Fortunately for Mary Washington, an immediate counter from veteran Madison McCallum put points back on the board for the home team, making the score 69-10.  Shortly after Madison's score UMW was again marching down the field.  Ruck after ruck, they moved into position and opened a second opportunity for Liv Stuart to score.  Shannon Gaskins, who scored twice earlier, was the fourth UMW player to successfully attempt a conversion.  With UMW well ahead, both teams settled into a slower style of rugby, essentially winding down the clock.  With little time to remaining, player of the match Carrie Carvey scored her fourth and final try of the match.  The conversion was again made by Shannon Gaskins.  When the final whistle blew, it was 83-10, in favor of the hosts, Mary Washington.
