UMW Women's Rugby Falls to William & Mary on Saturday

UMW Women's Rugby Falls to William & Mary on Saturday

On October 2, 2021, the Mary Washington Women's Rugby team hosted the College of William & Mary for an unusual day of rugby - two 7s matches and a 15s match consisting of two 20-minute halves.  Unfortunately, UMW lost all three.

Throughout the US, COVID-19 has been devastating to many women's collegiate programs.  The same can be said with the conference in which the UMW Women's team is competing - only half of the 14 teams are able to field a team.  Since W&M had not yet played a match this season, and because W&M had several rookies, W&M asked UMW for the day's unusual format.

The first 7s match had W&M jump out to a 5-point lead in the first minute.  Mary Washington countered with tries at the 4th and 7th minutes.  Scoring for UMW was Shannon Gaskins and Jules Yerovi, making it 10-5 at the half.  In the second half, the UMW offense was shutdown, as W&M put 3 tries on the board, converting one.  The final score of the first 7s match was 22-10 in William & Mary's favor.

The second 7s match consisted of mostly rookies from both teams.  W&M put two tries on the board in the first half, converting one, making the score 10-0 at the end of the half.  In the second half, W&M was able to move the ball quickly, finding space to score three additional tries.  With less than one minute remaining, UMW's Kayla Zegada was able to score her teams lone goal of the match.  She also converted the try, putting the final score at 25-7, again in William & Mary's favor.

The final match was a 15s match, but half the length in duration of a typical 15s match.  The first team to score in the match was William & Mary.  Six minutes into the match, they took a 5-0 lead.  UMW's Victoria Rulapaugh countered by scoring on the last play of the first half.  The unconverted try made the score 5-5 going into half time.  The UMW defense had similar problem in the second half as they did in the 7s matches.  William & Mary's counters and speed were too much for UMW to contain.  W&M put three more tries on the board in the second, resulting in a 24-5 victory for William & Mary.
