UMW Women Top UMBC

UMW Women Top UMBC

On Feb 18, 2017, Mary Washington women's rugby travelled to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.  After coming off a huge loss in the previous week to Rappahannock Women's Rugby, Mary Washington was looking for their first victory of the semester.

Mary Washington got off to a quick start, putting points on the board just 1 minute into the match.  Scoring off a strong open field run was Ebony Clarke ('17).  Jackie Sherman ('17) kicked the conversion, making it 7-0.  Mary Washington kept up the pressure by putting in another try just 6 minutes later.  Playing in her first rugby game ever, Kathleen Smith ('18) pushed the score to 12-0.

Perhaps the excitement of the two quick tries gave Mary Washington too much confidence, clouding their focus on the match.  Four minutes later, UMBC scored, running through several Mary Washington defenders.  UMBC converted the try, making it 12-7.

For most of the next ten minutes, Mary Washington kept control of the ball.  However, UMBC's defense continued to shift, shutting down any attacks.  At the 23rd minute, Ebony Clarke with a second open field attack, putting in another try.  Just 90 seconds later, Bernice Kear ('18) outran her wing for a try.  Mary Washington now led 22-7.  As time was ticking down, Bernice Kear put in a second try, just before half.  Jackie Sherman converted the score, making it 29-7 at the break.

In the second half, Mary Washington made a few substitutions.  While their play was not as intense in the second half, Mary Washington still controlled the game.  Putting in the first try in the second half was Lani Budi ('17).  One more try was scored before the matched ended; this one again by Lani Budi.  Her quick tap on a penalty caught UMBC by surprise, scoring with no time remaining.  Both of Lani Budi's trys were converted by Jackie Sherman, making the final 43-7.
