#24 UMW Women's Lax Falls to #20 CNU in Coast 2 Coast Tourney Semifinal, 12-9

The 24th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-9 decision to 20th ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon in the semifinal round of the Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at the Battleground. The Eagles' season comes to a close with a record of 5-6.

Mary Washington scored first, with 28:12 remaining, as sophomore Kayla Sarazin scored on an assist from senior Kennedy King. After the Captains tied the score less than two minutes later, UMW regained the lead with 23:36 to go on a Samantha Stachowiak goal. The Captains scored twice over the next five minutes to gain the lead, but King scored on a free position shot with 17:36 left to knot the score at 3-3.

CNU scored four straight goals over the next 12 minutes to grab a 7-4 lead, before UMW answered with goals from Kate Sovero and Clare Madden in the waning moments to cut the margin to 7-5 at halftime.

In the second, both teams were held scoreless for nearly 10 minutes, before CNU scored to start a 3-0 run and build their lead to 10-5 with 17:47 remaining. Sarazin scored with 17:24 left, and defender Rylie Cole went nearly coast-to-coast in scoring with 13:23 remaining to pull UMW to within 10-7. CNU would score the next two goals to return the lead to five, at 12-7, before UMW scored the game's last two goals: from Sarazin with 8:27 left, and from King on a free position with 7:13 to go.

Each team had 28 shots in the game, and CNU held a 16-13 edge in ground balls. UMW goalkeeper Reilly Miller made 12 saves, while Pullen had five draw controls and Stachowiak posted four ground balls.
