Stachowiak's Triple OT Score Lifts #19 UMW Women's Lax Past #22 St. Mary's

Junior Samantha Stachowiak scored the game-winning goal with 1:16 remaining in the third overtime period to lead the 19th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over visiting 22nd ranked St. Mary's College on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground in Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 4-3 overall, and 2-1 in C2C action.

Stachowiak, who led the Eagles with four goals and an assist, started the game scoring with 1:48 elapsed into the game. The Seahawks knotted the score 3:30 later, but the Eagles scored two straight to build a 3-1 margin. Freshman Katie Blair scored on a free position shot with 23:15 remaining, and again from the field with 15:41 to go. St. Mary's scored two over the next 10 minutes  to tie the score, and, after Blair connected on another free position, scored with 21 seconds left in the half to send the game to intermission tied at 4-4.

St. Mary's grabbed its first lead with 26:47 left in regulation, and only a Tess Siburn goal with 24:54 remaining stopped a three-goal run. Stachowiak and senior Kennedy King tied the score with goals with 14:17 and 10:57 left. St. Mary's went back ahead with 9:29 left, but Stachowiak tied the score once more with 21 seconds left in regulation.

After two scoreless overtime periods, Stachowiak capped her outstanding performance with the game winner with 1:16 left on the clock.

The Seahawks led in shots, 31-29, as well as gound balls, 24-16. UMW goalkeeper Riley Miller made 11 saves in goal, while Rylie Cole added five draw controls and three ground balls.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they visit #21 Christopher Newport at 4:00 p.m.
