King, Sarazin, Blair Lead #17 UMW Women's Lax Past #25 CNU, 18-12

Senior Kennedy King, sophomore Kayla Sarazin, and freshman Katie Blair each scored five goals in leading the 17th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to an 18-12 victory over 25th ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Captains fall to 5-3.

The Captains opened the scoring with 1:29 elapsed, but King would score at 27:52 and again at 22:54 to give the Eagles a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Blair followed with goals at 21:33 and 19:08 to up the margin to 4-1, and, after another CNU tally cut the margin to 4-2, King scoed her third of the day with 17:23 left on a free position shot.

After CNU answered, Sarazin joined the scoring tally at 13:55 on a Blair assist, and after another Captains score, Blair scored on a Sarazin assist with 12:02 left before intermission. CNU scored a pair to cut the margin to 7-6, but King and Sarazin answered with the final two goals before the half to give the Eagles a 9-6 advantage.

The visitors opened the second half scoring to draw to within 9-7, but would come no closer, as the Eagles scored the next five goals to extend its lead to 14-7. Sarazin scored twice in the run, while King, Blair, and Samantha Stachowiak added one apiece.

After two CNU goals, freshman Erin Steinberg stopped the run with a score with 17:12 left on a Blair assist. CNU cut the margin to 15-10 with 16:16 left, but Sarazin and Blair answered to give UMW a 17-10 lead with 11:43 to go. The Captains scored two of the final three goals, with Rebecca Pullen finding the capper for the Eagles with 7:07 left.

Blair posted five goals and two assists, Sarazin had five goals and one assist, and King had five scores for UMW. Cat Leighty had five goals for CNU.

The Eagles led in shots, 32-25, and held a key edge in draw controls, 21-11.UMW goalkeeper Reilly Miller had 10 saves in 57 minutes, and Cailyn Tripp added one in relief.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Tuesday when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 7:00 p.m.
