#14 UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls to Lynchburg, 13-12, in Double OT in Season Opener

The 14th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 13-12 double overtime contest to the visiting University of Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground in the Eagles' season opener.

The Eagles started the scoring, as Clare Madden scored with 27:44 remaining in the first half, but the Hornets answered with four straight. After a scoreless spell for both teams, UMW closed the half with four straight goals to take a 5-4 lead to halftime. Kennedy King scored unassisted with 6:09 to go, and Erin Steinberg followed at 5:22 on a Kayla Sarazin assist. Rebecca Pullen scored with 5:00 left, and Sarazin followed with 3:39 left.

The teams began the second half by trading the first eight goals, as UMW held a 9-8 lead with 15:10 remaining. Madden scored a pair of goals in the run, with Samantha Stachowiak and Pullen scoring to start an Eagle run. Pullen's goal started four straight UMW tallies, with Sarazin scoring a pair of goals, and King adding another with 12:47 left. The Hornets would then score four straight to knot the game, the last coming with just 22 seconds left in regulation.

After a scoreless first overtime period, the Hornets scored the game winner with 1:53 left.

The Eagles led in shots, 27-22, while Lynchburg led in ground balls, 25-20. Reilly Miller made four saves in goal for the Eagles, while Rylie Cole led the Eagles with five ground balls.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Salisbury University at 4:00 p.m.
