Hanna Ashby Named CAC Women's Lax Defensive Player of the Week

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Salisbury junior Gianna Demato & Mary Washington senior Hanna Ashby collected CAC Women's Lacrosse Players of the Week honors for April 15, 2019.    

Offensive Player of the Week

Sailsbury junior attacker Gianna Demato tallied seven goals in a 2-0 week for No. 5 Salisbury. The junior registered a hat trick in an 18-8 victory over Christopher Newport University before notching four goals in an 8-7 win against No. 16 The College of New Jersey.

Mary Washington's Hanna Ashby led #7 Mary Washington to a pair of Capital Athletic Conference wins this week, as the Eagles topped Southern Va., 19-3, and St. Mary's, 12-5. She registered 14 saves while allowing just five scores in the win at St. Mary's, and added one stop in limited action in the win at Southern Va. He save percentage for the week was a sterling 68.2%. This marks the second CAC Player of the Week honor this season for Ashby.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Frostburg State's Morgan Cavey posted eight points last week in a pair of Frostburg losses...Christopher Newport's Sarah Culver led the Captains with eight points during the week, including seven goals. On Saturday, she came through with five goals in a victory over Frostburg State. Her third strike during that game marked the 200th of her career, making her just the third player in program history to reach 200 career goals. She also became just the seventh player in CAC history to reach that milestone. Along with her historic efforts against the Bobcats, Culver also contributed a pair of goals against No. 5 Salisbury on Wednesday. The senior has now scored at least one goal in 19 straight games dating back to last season. That run is tied for the seventh-longest in CNU history...Hanna Ashby led #7 Mary Washington to a pair of Capital Athletic Conference wins this week, as the Eagles topped Southern Va., 19-3, and St. Mary's, 12-5. She registered 14 saves while allowing just five scores in the win at St. Mary's, and added one stop in limited action in the win at Southern Va. He save percentage for the week was a sterling 68.2%... Senior Julia Albert scored six goals this week, including five in a 12-5 victory at St. Mary's in a key CAC matchup at St. Mary's. She also scored once in limited minutes in a 19-3 win at Southern Va...York's Devin Hursey led the Spartans to a pair of lopsided CAC wins this past week. Hursey, who only played in the first half of both games this week, totaled seven points on two goals and five assists for the week. Hursey began the week with a goal and two assists in less than 20 minutes of action in the win over Frostburg State on Wednesday. She followed that with a goal and three assists in just under 15 minutes of action as the Spartans defeated Southern Virginia on Friday afternoon. Hursey became the Spartans' all-time leader in assists with her third assist in Friday's win as she passed former Spartan great Kim Wayson for the program record. Hursey now has 71 career assists in 54 career games...Salisbury's Skye Graham posted a 7.50 goals against average and 44.4 save percentage in a 2-0 week for No. 5 Salisbury. The junior made four saves in an 18-8 win over Christopher Newport while causing one turnover and coming up with four ground balls. She then made eight saves, caused three turnovers, and came up with four more ground balls in an 8-7 win against No. 16 The College of New Jersey. Graham and the Sea Gulls have now held their previous five opponents to eight goals or fewer...Christopher Newport's Sam Wettengel registered a team-high seven caused turnovers and 12 ground balls for the Captains last week. On Saturday against Frostburg State, the junior came through with a career-high seven ground balls to go along with five caused turnovers. Her seven ground balls equaled the ninth-highest single-game total in program history and the highest since 2009. Her five caused turnovers also matched her career-high and tied the eighth-highest single-game total in CNU history. She is one of only eight players in program history to register at least five ground balls and five caused turnovers in a single game and the only one who has done it more than once. Along with her work against the Bobcats, she also contributed five ground balls and two caused turnovers against No. 5 Salisbury on Wednesday. Equally effective on the offensive side, the midfielder chipped in with two goals in both outings during the week.
