Senior Hanna Ashby made 14 saves in goal to propel the seventh-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team past St. Mary's, 12-5, on Saturday afternoon in St. Mary's, MD. The Eagles improve to 12-2 overall, and 3-1 in the CAC. On the offensive end, senior Julia Albert led the way with five goals and Allison Davis added three goals.
UMW's offense started off slow and the Seahawks took advantage as they took a 3-0 lead 15 minutes into the game. The Eagles then turned it on as they scored five straight goals to close the half and take a 5-3 advantage. Davis started the scoring for the Eagles with 12:01 to play and then Kristen Kunaniec followed it up with a goal on an assist from Mackenzie Maguire.
Maguire then dished out another assist to Davis to tie the game at 3-3 with 8:58 remaining. Hope Lockwood put the Eagles on top 4-3 as she scored on an assist from Maguire. Albert, the leading goal scorer for UMW, got on the board with 4:10 left and that put the score at 5-3 going into the half.
Out of the half, Albert scored right away and then Maguire scored at the 25:43 mark to put the Eagles up 7-3. Albert scored her third goal of the day on an assist from Davies in a man-up opportunity with 17:42 to play. St. Mary's ended the run with a goal just 40 seconds later to put the score at 8-4. The Eagles defense then held strong over the last 17 minutes as they allowed just one goal.
UMW's offense took over the game as they scored four straight goals and open the lead up to 12-4. Albert scored the first two goals, one assisted by Davis and the other by Samantha Stachowiak, and then Maguire added her second goal of the day with 10:32 remaining in the game. Davis capped the scoring for the Eagles with 5:44 left as she scored unassisted to give UMW the 12-4 lead. St. Mary's scored their last goal of the game with 3:58 left and the Eagles held on for a 12-5 victory.
Paige Haskins caused five turnovers and picked up five ground balls, while Rylie Cole caused three turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Hanna Ashby made 14 saves in goal for the Eagles.
The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday as they will host #10 Catholic at 4 p.m.
