#5 UMW Women’s Lacrosse Knocks off Mount Union, 18-6, in the 2nd Round of the NCAA Tournament

The fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team knocked off the University of Mount Union, 18-6, to spoil their perfect season and advance to the regional section of the NCAA tournament where they will face Gettysburg at a time and place to be determined. The Eagles improve to 17-4 on the season. Julia Albert led the team with five goals and two assists. 

UMW jumped out ahead as they scored the first three goals. Paige Haskins got the scoring start as she scored on an assist from Holly Hudson 3:32 into the game. Allison Davis then scored on two free position opportunities to put UMW up 3-0 with 21:10 remaining. Mount Union got on the board with 19:14 to play.

The Eagles broke open the game as they managed to score seven straight goals and take a 10-1 lead. Albert scored her first goal with 17:52 left, and then Savannah Boyd scored unassisted to go up 5-1. Holly Hudson put away a free position shot  with 14:50 to play. Davis then added her third goal of the day and Mackenzie Maguire scored on a free position shot with 9:08 remaining to go up 8-1. Kristen Kunaniec came off the bench and scored on an assist from Albert, and then Hope Lockwood scored on an assist from Kunaniec to cap the 7-0 run by UMW.

The Raiders ended that streak with a goal from Danielle Rohrman with 3:55 remaining that got the game within eight, 10-2. Over the last 2:04, Kunaniec scored on an assist from Davis and then Albert scored with 59 seconds to play that put UMW up 10 at halftime.

In the second half, Albert scored just 57 seconds in to put UMW up 11, 13-2. The Raiders then added their third goal of the day with 22:09 to play. Maguire scored her second goal of the day to put the Eagles back up 11 with 19:39 to play. Mount Union answered as they scored two goals in a row and get the game to nine, 14-5.

UMW responded to the Raiders mini-run and added four in a row to put the game away. Maguire scored on an assist from Albert with 11:03 left, and less than a minute later Lockwood scored unassisted. Albert scored the last two goals for the Eagles, one coming off an assist from Kennedy King and the other on a free position shot, to put UMW up 18-5 with 6:19 to play. The Raiders capped the scoring on the day as they scored with just 3:01 to play and UMW held on to win 18-6.

Paige Childers led the team with seven draw controls, while Kirsten Littlefield had five. Littlefield picked up three ground balls and Savannah Boyd grabbed two of them. Hanna Ashby made three saves in goal, and Shannon Bremer made two on the day for the Eagles.

UMW led in draw controls 19-6, shots 34-19, and ground balls 16-8. The Eagles were 14-16 on clears.
