The ninth-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team defeated Marymount University, 17-6, in the CAC quarterfinals held in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles improve to 15-3 overall.
The Eagles got it going early as they went up 2-0, five minutes in, on a goal from Hope Lockwood assisted by Julia Albert and then Albert scored on a free position shot. Marymount got on the board with 24:01 to play.
From there, UMW scored five straight goals to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Paige Haskins scored the first goal of their run on an assist from Albert. Allison Davis scored her first of the day, and then Mackenzie Maguire scored to put UMW up 5-1 with 19:55 remaining. Holly Hudson then scored and Davis added her second on a free position shot that gave the Eagles a six point advantage.
The Saints ended that streak as they scored with 15:26 to play. Hudson then scored two straight goals to put UMW up 9-2. Marymount added two more goals, one coming on a free position shot, to get within five, 9-4. Lockwood capped the scoring in the first half as she scored on an assist from Maguire with 3:36 to play. UMW took a 10-4 advantage into halftime.
Out of halftime, the Saints scored two straight goals within the first two minutes of play to get within four, 10-6. Over the last 28 minutes of play, UMW did not allow a goal and they scored seven straight to close out the game.
Junior Savannah Boyd scored on a free position shot, and then Haskins scored on an assist from Maguire to go up 12-6. Kristen Kunaniec tallied her first goal of the day with 22:13 to play, and then Lockwood added her third on an assist from Maguire to put UMW up 14-6. Kunaniec added another goal on a Maguire assist, and then Maguire scored one of her own with 18:09 to play. Katherine Lambert scored the last goal of the day on an assist from Madison Hurlburt with 14:15 remaining and gave UMW a 17-6 lead.
Jennifer Bosserman led the Eagles with four ground balls, while Kirsten Littlefield caused two turnovers. Hanna Ashby made two saves, and Shannon Bremer made four saves for the Eagles.
UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to York for the CAC semifinal at a time TBA.
