Second Half Surge Leads #14 UMW Women's Lacrosse Past Frostburg, 16-5, in CAC Tournament 1st Round

Junior Holly Hudson and senior Kelsey Vincent each scored three goals and sophomore Mackenzie Maguire added two goals and four assists to lead the 14th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 16-5 victory over Frostburg State University on Tuesday in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Eagles improve to 14-4, and advance to Saturday's semifinals at Salisbury University.

Frostburg started the scoring on a Nikki Hallikas goal with 28:07 remaining in the first, but the Eagles answered at 24:51 on an Emily Mott goal. Frostburg regained the lead at 22:46, but the Eagles answered with four straight goals in a seven minute span to take a 5-2 lead.

Vincent scored her first at 20:24 on a Mott assist, and Hudson followed with goals at 19:28 (on a Maguire pass) and at 14:50 on a free position shot. Maguire capped the run at 13:10 on a free position.

Frostburg scored with 12:23, but Vincent answered at 10:27 on a Maguire pass. The Bobcats scored the final two goals of the half to trim the halftime deficit to 6-5.

The second half was all Eagles, as the hists scored 10 unanswered goals. Hudson scored at 25:14, and Sabrina Elliott followed at 22:40. Kate Smucker scored at 18:04 on a Maguire assist, and Savannah Boyd followed four minutes later to up the lead to 10-5.

Smucker scored at 12:45, and Maguire followed at 7:42. Vincent scored on a Maguire assist at 6:32, and Allison Davis found the net at 5:56 on a Mott feed. Elliott scored at 4:11 on a free position attempt, and Hope Lockwood capped the scoring at 1:50.

The Eagles led in shots, 36-20, and in ground balls, 23-14. Frostburg won 12 of 23 draw controls, and UMW caused eight failed clears.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they visit 10th ranked Salisbury University in the CAC semifinals. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
