UMW Women's Lax Falls at #13 York, 16-13, in CAC Semifinals

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team baatled back from an early deficit, but fell short at #13 York College in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles fall to 13-5 on the season.

After York scored first, UMW got on the board with a goal from Emily Atkinson, but York seized command with four straight goals to up the lead to 5-1. Jenna Petrucelli and Kelsey Vincent scored as the teams traded goals, and Katie Williams scored twice and Atkinson scored again as the Eagles cut the deficit at halftime to 9-6.

York opened the second half in the same manner as the first, sccoring four of the fiorst five goals to take a 13-7 lead with 13:55 to play. The Eagles then mounted  valiant charge, as Petrucelli scored twice and Corinne Wiederkehr once to cut the deficit to 14-10 with 8:50 remaining.

After a pair of York goals, UMW closed the game by scoring three straight, with Petrucelli scoring a man-down goal before Williams scored twice to cap the scoring.

York led in shots, 37-34, but the Eagles led in ground balls, 28-21. The Spartans held a 19-12 advantage on draw controls. Taylor Paige had five saves in goal for Mary Washington, and also added six ground balls. Petrucelli grabbed seven draw controls to break the season record for draws, with 85 on the year.

Williams led the Eagles with four goals and two assists, while Petrucelli scored four times. Atkinson added three goals and an assist.

The Eagles must now await a possible invitation to the NCAA Tournament, to be announced a week from Monday.
