The 14th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team broke loose in the second half to defeat 19th ranked Stevenson University, 14-10, on Wednesday in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 8-3 on the season, and 4-2 in CAC play.

The two teams traded goals throughout thew first half with neither team leading by more than one goal. Jenna Petrucelli opened the scoring for the Eagles with 26 minutes remaining, but Stevenson tied the score five minutes later. Senior Allie Kimmelman scored unassisted with 17 minutes left, but the Mustangs answered with two straight to take a 3-2 lead.

The Eagles would score three of the next four goals (from Megan Gersbeck, Catherine Kennedy, and Mo Sunderland) to take a 5-4 lead with 3:40 left in the half. Stevenson scored with 13 seconds remaining to tie the score just before halftime.

The teams continued to trade goals for the first 20 minutes of the second half, as Kimmelman, Petrucelli, Kennedy, and Lauren Callison netted goals for the Eagles. The score stood at 10-9 UMW with 12:29 to play, but the Eagles took charge with the next three goals to up the lead to 13-9. Maggie Nunn scored on a free position shot with 9:41 left, and Kimmelman scored on a Kennedy assist one minute later. Callison scored on a kennedy feed with just over two minutes to play to give UMW a 13-9 advantage.

After a Stevenson goal with one minute left, Petrucelli gained the hat trick with her third score in the final seconds. Kimmelman led the Eagles with four goals and one assist, while Petrucelli scored three times. Kennedy had two goals and two assists. Stevenson was led by Leah Warner's three goals.

The Eagles led in shots, 34-23, and had 20 ground balls to 19 for Stevenson. The Mustangs turned the ball over 20 times, nine more than the Eagles. Junior goalie Kathryn Stiltz had seven saves for UMW.

Mary Washington will visit Hood College next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
