Carpenters’ Double-Double Leads UMW Women Past Salisbury, 57-48

The University of Mary Washington Women's basketball team showed out against the Salisbury University Seagulls on Saturday afternoon in Salisbury, Md. Jordan Carpenter and Ashley Martin led the Eagles, scoring 16 and 14 points respectively, along with  Adeline Riners' 8. The Eagles move to 16-3 on the season, earning a win in its first of six-straight away games.

Junior guard Ashley Martin began the game for UMW with a layup at 9:42, with the first Eagle assist coming from Megan Baxter. Turnovers and good back-and-forth defense would persist for the next 2 minutes of play until Ashley Martin hit a bucket from beyond the arc to make it 6-4 UMW at 7:55. Multiple steals and proper rebounding would help the Eagles gain a 13-8 advantage over the next 3 minutes, but the Seagulls of Salisbury would fight back and tie the game at 13 with 2:35 to go in the first quarter. A good mid-range shot by Adeline Riner with 45 seconds to go would put the Eagles to within a point and Elizabeth Dufrane would capitalize off a steal by Sydney Sherman to end the 1st quarter and put Mary Washington up 2 with a score of 19-17.

A jumper from Elizabeth Dufrane would mark the beginning of the 2nd quarter at 9:46, which would be the only basket by either team for three minutes until the Salisbury came back with a bucket of their own to make it a 2-point game. A good jumper and free throw from Jordan Carpenter followed by another mid-range bucket would help the Eagles to a 6-point lead with just under 4 minutes to go in the 2nd, the score being 26-20. The Seagulls would go on a 7-0 run in one minute to give Salisbury a 1-point advantage with 2 minutes to go in the first half. One more shot was put up by each team to end the half, with Jordan Carpenter putting up a block with 2 seconds to go to send the teams to the locker room.

Keagan Schwab began the 2nd half with a 3-pointer at 9:30 to make the score 31-29, with the Seagulls retaliating and putting up a 3 of their own at 7:20 to give Salisbury the lead once again. A Salisbury layup at 4:35 would bring the score to 34-31, but it would not last long. The Eagles would go on to put up 8 straight points with buckets and free throws from Jordan Carpenter and Molly Sharman. With the score 39-34 UMW with 2 minutes to go in the 3rd, the Eagles would hold off the Seagulls making the score 41-38 at the end of 3 periods.

Multiple missed layups and jumpers from UMW to start the 4th would not last for long, with Ashley Martin showing up once again with a layup at 8:43 to give the Eagles a 5-point lead. For the first 6 minutes of the last 10 minutes, the Eagles would score 10 straight points making the score 51-38, until Salisbury countered with a free-throw at 4:05. Two back-to-back buckets from Salisbury at 2:22 and 1:56 made the score 55-45 UMW, with Adeline Riner ending the contest with a mid-range shot with a minute to go and a steal with 25 seconds to go to close out the win for the Eagles. Jordan Carpenter led UMW with 14 rebounds, as Sydney Sherman added 9 of her own.
