UMW Women's Basketball Cruises Past Southern Virginia, 77-47, on Thursday Evening

Junior forward Sydney Sherman put up great numbers all around against Southern Virginia University on Thursday evening, with 18 points, 7 rebounds, and one steal. The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team improves to 8-0 with its 77-47 win at home against the Knights in Fredericksburg, Va. Junior guard Jordan Carpenter had a good performance with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and two assists. Sophomore Elizabeth Dufrane had another breakout game off the bench with 15 points, with a pair of rebounds and 4 assists to her credit.

The Eagles broke ahead to a 21-8 lead after the first quarter, despite the many travel calls and fouls that kept the ball moving from side to side over the first 10 minutes. Mary Washington continued to put on a show in the 2nd quarter and into halftime while doubling Southern Virginias' score at 39-18. UMW ended both the first and second quarters with buzzer beater shots from Adeline Riner and Sophia Pavlech, respectively. The Eagles offense and defense held their lead through the games' entirety, with the 3rd and 4th quarter ending scores being 60-34 and 77-47, respectively. The Eagles kept the tempo high throughout the game, which helped them force 32 Southern Virginia turnovers.

The Eagles shot 48.1% from the field (25-52), making 3-12 three point attempts (25.0%), and put up an impressive 24-30 free throws (80.0%). Southern Virginia University shot 33.3% (16-48) from the floor, making 6-14 three point attempts (42.9%), and 9-19 free throws (47.4%). The Eagles outrebounded the Knights, 37-29, with 11 total steals.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Marymount University at 1:00 p.m.
