Thompson Leads UMW Women’s Basketball Past York, 71-43, on Senior Day

Emily Thompson, the lone senior on the team, led the University of Mary Washington women's basketball with 18 points past York College, 71-43, on senior day in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 17-7 overall on the season and 6-3 in the CAC.

UMW jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Tory Martin and Molly Sharman both knocked down jump shots. Maddie Shifflett grew the Eagles' lead to 8-3 as she made a layup with 4:39 to play in the quarter. After York tied the game at 8-8, UMW finished the quarter on a 6-2 run to go up 14-10. Martin, Jordan Lee, and Bri Harper all scored points in the run.\

The Eagles extended their lead in the second quarter as Sharman drained two three-pointers to put them up 24-13 with 5:17 left. The Spartans went on a little run and cut the lead to six, 24-18. From there, Thompson closed the half with four straight three-pointers and put UMW up 36-21 at the break. 

Shifflett maintained UMW's lead as she knocked down a jump shot with 7:32 to play to put the score at 40-27. York cut the lead to 11 with 6:41 to play in the game. The Eagles closed the third quarter with an 11-0 run to take a 54-32 lead into the fourth. Five different Eagles players contributed points in the run.

Sharman put UMW up 24, 58-34, as she nailed a jumper. T. Martin kept the Eagles up 24 as she grabbed an offensive rebound and scored it with 4:53 to play. UMW closed out the game from there to take the win 71-43.

Sharman and T. Martin both chipped in 12 points a piece. Shifflett added 11 on the day. A. Martin hauled in 10 rebounds and had eight points.

UMW shot 28-58 (48.3%) from the field, 8-18 (44.4%) from three-point range, and 7-13 (53.8%) from the free throw line.

The Eagles will travel to Salisbury on Wednesday with a chance to clinch the #2 seed in the CAC tournament at 6 p.m.
