Junior forward Tory Martin scored 20 points to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 58-53 victory at Southern Virginia University on Wednesday night in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 14-6 overall, and 3-2 in conference play.

The Knights jumped out to an early advantage, as UMW didn't gain the lead until the score stood at 7-6 with 6:44 left in the first on a Martin layup. The Knights scored the next two baskets before field goals from Martin and freshman Ashley Martin returned the lead to the Eagles. A three pointer from Bri Harper and a basket from Jordan Lee upped UMW's advantage to 16-10, and the teams swapped baskets to close the first with UMW holding an 18-12 lead.

Martin opened the second with a basket to extend the lead to eight before SVU responded with a three point play. The Eagles used a 7-0 run, capped by a three pointer from senior Emily Thompson, to open up a 27-15 lead, and baskets from Thompson and Martin ran the margin to 31-17. The Eagles held a 32-21 lead at halftime.

Thompson opened the third with five points to hold the lead at 12, but the Knights began to chip away, cutting the margin to 39-36 with 3:19 left in the period. Martin made a pair of baskets and Thompson hit another three to give UMW a ten-point cushion heading to the fourth.

After trading baskets to start the final quarter, SVU scored five straight to draw within five, but a pair of Maddie Shifflett baskets held the Knights at bay. Eight straight points from the hosts cut the margin down to one, at 54-53, with 1:20 left. The Knights had a shot for the lead in the final seconds, but the attempt was blocked by Ashley Martin, and Tory Martin and Faith St. Clair made free throws in the final seconds for the win.

Martin made 7-15 shots en route to 20 points, making 6-7 free throws. Thompson scored 13, and Martin also led with seven rebounds. The Eagles shot 22-50 from the floor, making 4-13 three pointers and 10-15 free throws.
