UMW Women’s Basketball Falls at York, 67-55, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team fell at York College, 67-55, on Saturday in York, PA. The Eagles slip to 13-6 overall, and 2-2 in the CAC. Junior Maddie Shifflett led the Eagles with 20 points and five rebounds.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the first 2:34 of the game. Faith St. Clair gave the Eagles an 8-7 advantage as she knocked down a jumper on an assist from Bri Harper. A Tory Martin layup with just 15 seconds left in the quarter gave UMW a 12-11 lead.

Ashley Martin began the second quarter with a three-pointer to grow UMW's lead to four points. York made a run and tied the game at 17 a piece on a jump shot with 5:19 to play in the half. With the game tied at 19, T. Martin scooped home a layup on an assist from Molly Sharman with 53 seconds left. The Eagles took a 21-20 lead at the half. 

Sharman knocked down a three-pointer 2:16 into the third quarter that put UMW up four, 26-22. The Spartans then went on a 7-2 run to take a 29-28 advantage. The Eagles stayed within two points over the next couple of minutes and a Jordan Lee jump shot tied the game at 35-35. York finished the quarter by scoring five straight and they held a 40-35 lead going into the fourth.

York made three straight three-pointers to begin the fourth quarter and found themselves ahead 49-35. UMW answered with a 7-0 run of their own to put the score at 49-42 with 6:09 left. The Spartans went back up 11 and then maintained their lead from there to win the game.

T. Martin finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. A. Martin added six points and eight rebounds. 

The Eagles shot 22-66 (33.3%) from the field, 4-19 (21.1%) from three-point range, and 7-13 (53.8%) from the free throw line.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to Southern Virginia for a game at 6 p.m.
