Freshman Bri Harper scored 18 points and junior Maddie Shifflett chipped in 17 points to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team past King's College of Pennsylvania, 63-56, on Sunday afternoon in the Jamie Lynn Roberts Classic. The Eagles improve to 11-3 overall on the season.
In the early going, the Eagles jumped out to a 5-2 advantage. Ashley Martin got the scoring started and then Emily Thompson drained a three-pointer to put UMW up three. UMW extended their lead to eight, 14-6, on a jumper from Faith St. Clair. The Monarchs knocked down a shot at the end of the quarter to put the score at 16-10 in favor of the Eagles.
After five straight points from the Monarchs to begin the second quarter, Harper answered with five straight of her own to put the Eagles up 21-15 just 1:44 in. The Eagles went cold from there for the rest of the quarter as they scored just four points. Jordan Lee and Shifflett scored those four points, and UMW held a 25-23 lead at halftime.
King's took the lead on an early three-pointer, but a layup from Molly Sharman tied the game at 29 a piece with 7:45 remaining in the quarter. The two teams played even over the next few minutes until the Monarchs took a 38-35 lead with 2:38 to play in the third. Shifflett tied the game at 39-39 with 1:15 left but a late jumper by King's put them up 41-39.
UMW came out hot in the fourth quarter as they went on a 11-2 run to put them up 50-43. Tory Martin, Sharman, Harper, and Shifflett all contributed buckets in that run. The Monarchs answered with a 9-2 run of their own that tied the game at 52 a piece with 3:53 left in the game. A Harper three-pointer and two free throws from Shifflett put the Eagles back up 57-52. With King's down just one point, Harper put the game away as she converted a three-point play the old fashioned way to put UMW up 60-56 with just 24 seconds left. The Eagles held on from there to take the win.
On top of Shifflett pouring in 17 points, she also pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds. St. Clair scored four points and hauled in eight rebounds. Sharman added eight points, five rebounds, and three assists.
UMW shot 23-61 (37.7%) from the field, 5-19 (26.3%) from three-point range, and 12-15 (80.0%) from the free throw line. The Eagles out-rebounded the Monarchs 50-25 and dished out 13 assists as a team.
UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they will begin conference play with a home matchup against St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
