Junior forward Maddie Shifflett scored 17 points and added seven rebounds to lead four players in double figures, as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team rolled to a 70-51 victory over Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday evening at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 4-1 on the season.

After allowing the first points of the game, the Eagles netted five straight with a three pointer from senior Emily Thompson and a pair of free throws from freshman Molly Sharman, and would never trail again. Six straight points from junior Tory Martin upped the Eagle advantage to 15-10, and a three pointer from freshman Hannah Stockman upped the lead to eight, before a Blue Jay triple cut the margin to 20-15 after one period.

In the second, UMW used its trademark defense to pull away, outscoring Hopkins, 15-5, in the frame. Thompson kickstarted the quarter with a traditional three point play, and added another basket after the Blue Jays scored five straight to keep the Eagles ahead by five, at 25-20, with 5:19 left. Martin scored a pair of baskets as UMW finished with an 8-0 run, and carried a 33-20 lead to halftime.

Four different players scored to start the third for UMW, holding the Blue Jays at bay, and a three pointer from freshman Bri Harper returned the lead to 13 at 44-31 with 4:51 remaining in the third. Shifflett then scored a pair of baskets and swell the lead to 17 points, and her three pointer in the waning moments gave the Eagles a 54-36 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Freshman Ashley Martin connected for a three pointer to push the lead to 22 with 7:16 remaining, and the teams traded free throw chances over the next five minutes. Sharman made a pair of baskets down the stretch, and the Eagles carried a 19-point victory to the locker room.

UMW shot 22-50 from the floor (44%), making 5-12 three point shots and 21-24 free throws, while Johns Hopkins shot 14-54 from the field (25.9%), making 5-25 three point shots and 18-28 free throws. The Eagles controlled the rebounding battle, 47-34.

Shifflett made 6-10 field goals en route to 17 points, while Sharman scored 14 points and Tory Martin added 13. Thompson added 10. 

The Eagles will host North Carolina Wesleyan College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
